Interesting, Deep Scholarship, but clear Bias

First of all, I want to say that I think this is a very good book for the history of economic theory. I did enjoy reading it, and while I have a few problems with the text, I still believe the text was well worth my time and money.

With that said,the bias in the book is a minor irritant at most points. The coauthors clearly respect the heterodox, value theory of labor thinkers much more than thinkers like Say, Bastiat, or the Austrians. I found this good at first, bc I had not had much experience with Post-Marxist thinkers, and wanted to get to know them. The problem, however, is when the coauthors skim over problems with the labor theory of value. The section on the Transformation Problem implies that there the whole issue is an illusion, and that Marx resolved it. While this is a viable point of view, to skim over such a significant point of contention seems to be unwise. For another example, the Marginalists and mathematical economics in general is considered to be superfluous and unimportant.

These issues do not detract from the great scholarship at other points in the work. The vast majority of the text is a fast, fascinating page turner (yes, apparently that is possible for history of economic thought). I highly recommend this book for either personal reading or for use in a classroom, but the bias of the coauthors must be kept in mind.

Anchoring a Short Bookshelf on Our Current Economic Crisis

Review of E.K. Hunt & Mark Lautzenheiser, 'History of Economic Thought: A Critical Perspective (third edition)'
This book reflects impressive expertise and extensive scholarship. It is timely in light of the current world-wide economic meltdown, providing the essential concepts and historical background to let readers interpret the news of the day and to anticipate some likely future events. I have to give it 5 stars because its strengths greatly outweigh its weaknesses. I will detail just a few of those strengths before turning to some obvious gaps. Major strengths: (1) the authors are card-carrying economic theorists, and they present their material from the perspective of Economics insiders; this is a great strength, but it also leads to some weaknesses mentioned below; (2) the book is consistently well-written, though occasionally the reader may be confused by some technicalities; better to err in this direction than the opposite, however; (3) the treatment of Marx, Veblen, Sraffa, and others is a welcome corrective to their usual cursory dismissal by the mainstream; even the discussion of Adam Smith is enlightening; (4) topics like alienation of labor, mystification of class relations by mainstream ideology, and the inexorable rise of the military-industrial complex gain new force by being clearly linked to a centuries-old capitalist dynamic. It is particularly interesting to see how Marx's critique was anticipated in many ways by some of the revered founding fathers of economics, the earliest defenders and advocates of capitalism.
As for weaknesses, these can be summed up in one point: for 'A Critical Perspective,' this book is not critical enough. The reason, as mentioned above, is that the authors keep to a disciplinary perspective well within academic Economics. For example, they have little or no systematic leverage when it comes to incorporating "externalities" like unsustainable population growth and dramatic depletion of energy and other natural resources. As a supplemental set of readings, the following is a very short list which expands the disciplinary perspective, first from Political Economy to "Economic Politics" (Jay Hanson, 'From Capitalism To Democracy'), then to Anthropology and Sociology beyond industrial societies (Marvin Harris, 'Cultural Materialism'), then to Biology and Physics (Meadows, Randers, & Meadows, 'Limits to Growth: The 30-Year Update'), and finally to individual and group decision making: Behavioral Economics, as represented in the work of Herbert A. Simon, Vernon Smith, Daniel Kahneman, and Amos Tversky -- all of whom are mentioned cursorily by Hunt & Lautzenheiser -- and the vivid picture of class arrogance in Karen Zouwen Ho's 'Liquidated: An Ethnography of Wall Street,' which is not mentioned. Most of these items have to do with thinking straight about cause and effect. A good guide to thinking straight about means and ends is John Rawls's 'A Theory of Justice.'
The 5-star rating is still warranted, because that short bookshelf, which is anchored by 'History of Economic Thought,' only adds support for the authors' fundamental critical perspective, drawing that support from a range of disciplines related to Economics.

This book is why I'm in grad school.

I love Hunt's History of Economic Thought. I own the first edition, and it is so marked up with highlighting and underlining that I decided to invest in the 2nd edition for my graduate level history of economic thought course. I would rank this as a high undergraduate level book- it lays down history of economic thought in a clear and (somewhat) concise manner. It is very easy to understand, and the book is an enjoyable read (if you like to learn about the development of economic thought). There are definitely other books which are good for learning about economic doctrines, but Hunt's book is a solid foundation.

About the Author
Paul Axtell provides consulting and personal effectiveness training to a wide variety of clients, from Fortune 500 companies and universities to nonprofit organizations and government agencies. A large focus of his work is how to run effective and productive meetings: to turn them from the calendar items that so many dread into useful, productive sessions with measurable results.

Paul has an engineering degree from South Dakota School of Mines and an MBA from Washington University in St. Louis. He has ten years of engineering manufacturing experience and fifteen years of experience in corporate personnel and training. The last twenty years have been devoted to designing and leading programs that enhance individual and group performance within large organizations.

He is the author of Ten Powerful Things to Say to Your Kids: Creating the Relationship You Want with the Most Important People in Your Life, which applies the concepts of his work to the special relationships between parents and children of all ages. Thus far, it has been translated into Korean, Vietnamese, Chinese, Arabic, French, and Spanish.

Buy this book. Hands down, buy this book. If you are new to the meeting game and you do not have the confidence yet to stand and lead a group, buy this book. If you just received a promotion to a management position and meetings intimidate you, buy this book. And, if you have organized, conducted, tried to avoid, and/or even relish meetings, buy this book. Yes, it is just that necessary for your toolbox.

Paul Axtell provides vivid examples, simple language, and plenty of best practices for the novice to the seasoned meeting professional in his handbook, Meeting Matters: Eight Powerful Strategies for Remarkable Conversations. Axtell takes a practical approach to the creation and maintenance of a meeting environment that encourages communication which leads to productive and respectful gatherings of those with common interests and goals. Best meeting book you will every read.....

Most people believe meetings to be a waste of valuable time and money. This is due to how ineffective and poorly managed current meetings are being led.
Paul Axtel is a highly reputable coach, mentor and businessman who genuinely cares about people and their time. In his book he provides more than just the common sense approach to how meetings should be run. He is willing to dig into difficult subjects that many people think about but generally won’t discuss.
His book is well thought through and laid out in a way that makes it as valuable for the new manager wanting to learn how to run an effective meeting for the first time as well as a seasoned manager needing tips on how to handle a specific type of situation. Paul is strategic in providing meeting design. He combines strategy and relationship to give you the opportunity to make each meeting powerful.

I studied using the sample questions and they were exactly like the ones found on the exam, really helpful guide and it totally took the stress away as it breaks down all of the complicated stuff and really helped me feel confident! So helpful! I always stress over tests so this was extremely helpful to me. The sample questions were just like the ones found in the actual test, so it was very handy! Perfect prep for the PMI-RMP Exam

I have a degree in Insurance and obtained my Associates in Risk Management (ARM) many years ago. I have worked in the industry for years and figured that I was finished with these certifications. Turns out I was wrong as an employer suggested that I look into the PMI-RMP exam as it is more project focused. "Rizvi's PMI-RMP Exam Prep Guide" is a must-have for anyone looking to quickly tackle the exam. Complex project risk management concepts are explained in relatively simplistic terms, which makes it so easy to follow. I was afraid of this exam, but Rizvi's book has positioned me well to pass the PMI-RMP exam.

Basics of Business

Key Performance Indicators for Dummies is a good book to get your rookies knowledgeable on what is KPI and what KPQ (KP questions) will get you to the performance you want. The difference between leading and lagging indicators is a good one to know, even the focus on the word indicator in KPIs is essential. While the author does these kind of highlighting and contextualizing well, the dos and dont when it comes to KPIs, the book starts to feel like many booklets put together, trying to reel in different departments together. Yes finance is where all the numbers are but it is this cross functional jump, that makes the book look like a motley. I was very interested with terms like KPQ, EVA- Economic Value Added but after a while there were too many terms (I remember reading about NPS - Net Promoter Score, but cant recall which book), that made it seem like KPI should have been a small section under an umbrella title that would tie the book all in one. Something to appreciate in this varied terms definition are the examples, which make all the acronyms very easy to understand. Keep this book under the 'Basics of Business' folder.

Performance Assessment and Analysis

the major takeaway I got from this book was the importance of determining the what and why before going to the how. Data measurement and analysis is commonplace but until the goals are determined they are for naught. This book examines Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) and discusses different types along with suggestions on how to implement and assess them. Written and organized in the standard Dummies style, it is easy to read and follow. That being said, this book seems best for those with at least some exposure to KPIs. I thought the emphasis on updating the KPIs was spot on. Data is fluid and everything changes. Just because you can measure something doesn't mean that you should. To that end the last chapter, The Top Ten KPIs To Use, was the most valuable. Overall, an interesting look at data collection and assessment for advancing business strategy.

A good, basic overview

Like most "for Dummies" books, this is a straightforward read. I like that it gives ideas to look at performance indicators in a very organized, methodical way. For anyone who has not done any research or evaluation (e.g. looking for performance outcomes in some way), this would be very helpful. It frames this kind of inquiry in a nice way, and it is generalizable enough to fit practically any situation or place. I do a lot of teacher/faculty development that looks at performance outcomes, and there are a few ideas in here that I might use, but as an expert in research and evaluation there wasn't anything new in this for me. A book that I thought was a little better is Hubbards "How to Measure Anything" which might give a few more ideas about how to determine the desired outcomes, which is necessary fro looking at KPIs.

There but for the grace of God, go I.
Thank you to my friend, Suzanne Garber. I just finished reading her latest book, SAFETY NETwork, and recommend it to all executives and those contemplating a career as a corporate executive.

I found Ralph Pibb’s story almost too overwhelming – sad and pathetic but uplifting as well. Ralph’s story touched me in so many ways. Most of us have been a victim like Ralph at some point of our career, or know of a colleague who has suffered like him. Today, executive careers are volatile and unpredictable. For many of us, executive success came at a high price for us and our families.
The traditional social contact was broken many years ago, and ruthless capitalism creates many sad stories like Ralph’s. At least, there was the promise of a happy ending in this story.

I recently ‘lost’ a consulting job and resigned from another, at the same time, and went into self-reinvention mode immediately. I’d had my own professional services practice for a while, juggling my business writing projects with project management and consulting for Fortune 1000s and 500s. I love that this book focuses on what's helped women in emerging economies overcome the obstacles they face to achieve their goals and dreams. Perseverance (against all odds), courage, confidence and determination are things that have really surfaced among the amazing group of women interviewed, and are definitely takeaways that resonate with me. I have found this book very insightful and inspirational, with key takeaways that can certainly be applied to how I can pursue my goals. Regardless of where you live and what you're trying to achieve, I highly recommend reading this book. Two of my favorite quotes: 1. "Keep going. You will find courage on the other side of your fears." 2. "Success is finding personal meaning and contentment in your life".

Financial freedom it is

Financial Wellness programs come in many shapes and sizes and can be tough to choose between. So it's pretty healthy for me to view different opinions, may it be from people or from books. I'm glad I purchased this book. It's mind opening for me with what to do exactly with my money. Sometimes all you need to know are great advices and they come from books :)

Before reading this book, I had read many books on how to achieve financial stability. But this book is really amazing. It has all the information that I didn’t find in other books. The author explains quite in detail about debt, credit, difference between good and bad debt, types of debt, essential of budgeting, budgeting mistakes, importance of credits and other important details about getting financial stability. The guidelines on debt reductions are also very helpful. Useful tips and strategies are presented in simple and easy to understand words. This business book is a key to happy and satisfied life. Being financially stable is quite difficult; however this book is the key to keep financial things in control. Great book!
