Google Drive in 30 Minutes

Disclosure: I won this book in an IT World promotion. The author subsequently contacted me and asked me to review it.

I have used what is now called "Google Drive" for several years, mostly the spreadsheet. The extent of my knowledge is hands-on experience and transferring Microsoft Office concepts to a new ecosystem. Google Drive & Docs in 30 Minutes is the first sustained effort I've made to get my hands around the software. Even if you've used it awhile, you likely haven't dug into niches nor kept up with changes Google has made. You don't know what you don't know.

The book is a march from setting up a Drive account -- the author notes that if you have an existing GMail account you're good to go -- through working with the start screen and applications. The good news is that it's never dry or tedious. The author writes well and the book hits its target audience while straddling the line between obtuse and condescending. The bad news is you're going to spend substantially more than 30 minutes, particularly if you work through the examples, which I suggest. Drive is a comprehensive suite that the book covers in some detail. There is just no way around investing the time; coming across something useful to you is the reward.

I'm glad there is an entire chapter on collaboration, including setting it up, how it works, and what it looks like in operation. The product deserves one; collaboration is truly a killer app and Google has made it easily accessible.

The final chapter covers offline storage and versioning. I can't fault the author for adding something he believes is useful to readers but these are esoteric subjects for a "30 Minutes" book.

One significant omission is discussion of shortcut keys in any of the apps. For a suite you might use all day long, the productivity gain is considerable. I would throw in basic shortcuts common to each O/S while I was at it. Another omission is the lack of references to external help and additional resources. This is an introductory book. As you use the product you'll have questions; I do. The apps themselves have help menus but how difficult could it be for the author to list the URLs of Google and third-party sites he recommends?

My other complaint is with the screen shots, which are often grainy and suffer from low contrast.

Just What I Need

I am so glad this was made! I've been using Google Docs for a while now and have been encouraging my teacher colleagues to do so as well to facilitate collaboration. It has become my go-to text book to help new users understand quickly. If you're new to Google Drive or Google Documents, this will help you. If you're experienced, and want something to help those who come to you with questions, this is a nice tool to help them remember what you show them. I highly recommend it.

Accurate in MANY ways

My laptop crashed! As a busy writer, I needed something to help manage my written words and social media communications. Emails alone consume a lot of time, and searching the internet aids in some research. A purchase of a Google Chromebook was a wise investment to meet my immediate needs, but I would have to learn the new Chrome OS.

Enter Ian Lamont. His claims to get readers up-to-speed with new technical jargon holds true. Many of the tips now seem intuitive, but I needed a launchpad from which to spring, and his book met my demands. This author also provide several smaller shortcuts and advice about using the Docs, making my writing easier while learning the new OS. To other readers/potential buyers: do not be dismayed about learning the Chrome OS or using shared documents with the (free!) software, because Lamont provides busy writers and professionals that with which the need to immediately learn over a lunch break. This book is highly recommended, and the author also provides teasers for other books in his "...in 30 Minutes" series.

I'm sorry but I was under the impression this book had actual strategies to help save and plan for taxes. After reading the book in just a few hours, the underlying theme in each chapter is that one needs to consult with a Certified Tax Coach in order to develop these strategies. Each chapter was very basic and touched on a few tax saving tips very lightly and then the answer was to discuss with your Certified Tax Coach in order to take advantage of these tips and others that may be available. As a small business owner, I do not think anything was presented that I am not currently doing or at least have not heard of.

Great publication! This is a must have for anyone that files a income tax return. Even those of you who hire a CPA it never hurts to study the IRS rules to protect yourself. Keep in mind not matter who prepares your return you are responsible for the correctness of the return and you alone will be fined for errors.

Handy Guide for Small Business Owners

I purchased this book because my tax advisor, Patrick O'Hara, is one of the contributing authors. Although I have worked for a CPA for the past 15 years, I was amazed at the different strategies that are available to small business people. I had never even heard about the section of the tax code that Patrick wrote about until reading this book. I think this book is a handy guide for small business owners and should stimulate them to ask the right questions and find the right tax advisor for their situation.

Tiffany :The Budgetnista" Aliche writes (and also appears and speaks) with simple, easy to understand budget and savings hints and tips. She focuses on fun, financial empowerment .Her company, The Budgetnista, specializes in the delivery of financial literacy education.

Atho she is not a registered adviser, I found her advice to be excellent for those middle class folks (or those just reaching for middle class) who need some help making and KEEPING on a budget and especially putting some aside. This book focuses on savings, and should likely be bought along with or after "Live Richer Challenge: Learn how to budget, save, get out of debt, improve your credit and invest in 36 days."

Another Great Read that hit me where it hurt!

As usual Martin Dasko has hit the nail on the head by shedding light on people's bad work habits and offers us a realistic and well planned approach to fix these problems.

If you're overly sensitive or you feel it's not you that's the problem then this book isn't for you. If you're not familiar with Martin's writing/teaching then I'll give you the coals notes... He's no nonsense and takes no pity on those who procrastinate. You only have yourself to blame. It's evident Failure to Launch no more" is a guide for those constantly holding themselves back due to self doubt, laziness, and family. Just do! No matter how crazy the dream sounds. Dream big and see it through.

Failure to launch no more really resonated with me and it really outlined why I'm not succeeding in certain areas. Nothing to do with my capabilities and everything to do with me second guessing every move I make. This guide showed me how to do that less and to put me first. Say yes to more opportunities!!

He shares his own personal stories and accounts to put things into perspective for the reader.

When it comes to breaking the mould of being comfortable and accepting what society expects Martin Dasko and his new book "failure to launch" is a good start. I've known Martin for about a year now and he is very perspicacious when it comes to making financial choices. His vehemence for helping people is quite obvious the more you read his blogs and books. Failure to launch seemed like it was written for me personally because every paragraph hit me like a left cross to the chin. It's straight up, raw and not candy coated. This is advice even successful folks can take. A quote that really stood out to me was "I personally try not to equate being realistic with giving up" too many people do and that quote stuck with me. But I'll warn you now that Martin DOES do this for a passion so please be serious when reading this and follow his advice and experiences.

Good lessons in sales skills

As a former salesman I can recommend this book It is not just for car sales either. The sales concepts in this book are all transferable
concepts to any form of sales. It is a short read but has inciteful useful info. I also liked the fact that he had other suggested reading
at the end of the book for further study on how to sell.

It was OK

This book was one of those books you start reading that you realize isn't going to be a treasure chest but will indeed contain one or two jewels if you're looking for them which I did and found. It was a rough go though as the editing is terrible and you need to be prepared to replace/insert words or phrases for the sentences to make sense. I would have given it another star if I didn't have to do that.

The Most Confident Sales Person I've Ever Met

When I started my career in marketing, one of my first clients, was the building materials company, Owens Corning. I soon had the opportunity to work with a very unique sales person, Bob Franco. I had never seen a sales person with so much confidence and smarts. He would be given a sales task and he would just go make the sale. I would hear his boss, tell him, "We want you to get this customer to buy this product of ours." The next thing I knew the sale was made. It didn't seem to matter how tough the customer was. I was fortunate enough to ride along with Bob on several sales calls and I got to see his approach first hand. The first thing I learned was the power of confidence. The customers paid attention as they knew they better listen to what Bob had to say. The second thing I learned was the importance of using plain English and not hiding behind corporate buzz words. The third thing I learned was how the importance of preparation and knowledge which is where confidence comes from. Bob moved onto leadership positions based on those same skills. In Bob's book, he tells you the secrets to his success in an easy to read and easy to understand style. If you want to improve your sales skills, buy this book.

Mr. Franco has the exceptional talent of transferring his personal persona (which has powered his successful career) in the Sales profession into the written word. The approach is easy to read and void of intellectual filler; but full of practical experience to educate the reader. Great read...enthralling and refreshing departure from most clinical the "how to do it" format typical of functional centric books. Especially valuable is the sharing of success approaches along with the learnings from failed approaches shared candidly by Mr. Franco that will save huge cycle time if properly internalized by they reader. I strongly recommend this to any one truly interested in elevating their performance potential to excel in the greatest profession in the world--Sales!

If I had this book 25 years ago, life would have been easier. If I had the book 25 years ago I might not have believed it. Nothing beats learning the hard way if you time. The world today does not provide time to learn the hard way. This is a great book to use to coach your people or to decide if you have the talent to be a sales person. I grew up a manufacturing person, I love to make things. I learned the hard way it does take a genius to fill up a building, but you might be close to a genius is you figure out how to empty the building. Real success and real income is in selling services and products at a profit. If you want sell, decide if you understand what hard work requires, put this book in your read once a year collect or read when frustrated collection. The book is short, easy and absolutely correct.

The book covers some good solutions to problems I have had

I have used Todoist for the last year and half approximately and recently hit an issue with just too many tasks floating around, not that I was not being productive, just feeling that I was not getting everything done and that several things were lingering.

The book covers some good solutions to problems I have had, plus some solutions that I will probably never use. For the cost, its a nice short read, you can skip over a couple sections if not applicable. I got through it in about an hour, and immediately could see a few things I could use.

If you have a strong interest in brick-and-mortar category-killers (Walmart, Staples, Best Buy, Pet Smart etc.) this book is a great read for you. It brilliantly paints the picture for each of these businesses and explores the challenges each must deal with in the face of the threat from Amazon - and the new reality of retailing in an omni-channel world. Very insightful thought leadership about the future of retail with many facts, figures and data to support their views. The book is large format - the outside dimensions of a magazine but an inch thick.

product research is necessary to sell a profitable product on amazon.

Being able to sell products on Amazon is a great business I totally love this concept of FBA (fully backed by amazon). But there are many products that you can sell on amazon and you don't just want to sell any product that will just sit 'on the shelf'. So it is a good practice to research the products that will sell well and this book provides all the information necessary to research for profitable products. Nothing has been left out so if you are still on the fence thinking about getting into this business get a copy of this book and start doing your research.

Very informative book.

This book is fantastic. It doesn't have multiple chapters of useless information and grabs your interest from the very beginning. Confirms a lot of the research I have done myself, but the information was put together in a step-by-step guide at the end. The process is explained in a simple way and isn't overly complicated. After reading the book, an online course is introduced in relation to it, and they are both amazing sources of information. I strongly recommend both this book and it's video course!
