Bottom Line: Some simple writing advice that works

If you've ever written an e-mail or letter asking for action from others but haven't seen them take action, the BLUF technique in this book can turn things around for you and makes this book's value far greater than its price. Along with the BLU technique the other gives other helpful tips for clarifying your message so others "get it" and act as you requested or directed in your message. I use many of the approaches the author suggests and get compliments on my writing, so I know her advice works if you apply it. If you are willing to admit that your writing isn't always clear to your audience and if you are willing to work a little on your writing, this brief guide can help you make quick progress and get better results from your writing.

A great book - don't let the size fool you! Munzenmaier's advice is spot-on, starting with the Bottom Line Up Front format. This book is packed with clear, practical ideas and examples to help anyone improve their writing so they can have greater impact. It's a quick read (which I always appreciate) written in a conversational style, and I appreciate that the author has included source information and additional resources. Love getting big results with such a small investment!

If you want to stay on top of the communication game, you need this book.

In Writing to Get Action, Cecelia Munzenmaier gives you the tools to address the cold hard fact that we all get too much written information flying by our vision every day. Expressing your ideas in writing alone is not an effective way to get someone to do the specific things you want them to do. You have to be strategic and those strategies have changed.

Munzenmaier’s books are always practical, insightful, well supported and give ample links to additional resources to go deeper. She does such a good job of illustrating her ideas through examples and contrast. You will come away with a solid understanding of the ideas and how to use them.

For your own peace of mind in achieving the results you want, I highly recommend purchasing this short action plan for being heard and respected.

One of the qualities I value most about Munzenmaier’s books is the quality of her examples and ways of illustrating an idea so the reader can be clear about the ideas. Her use of the memo that could have prevented the Three Mile Island Nuclear Accident in the United States is still alive in me.

This book is valuable for managers and employees. I can even see it being of use to parents and grandparents who want to be more effective communicating with young people. I know that is a stretch, but consider this. Just like people in organizations and the workplace, young people have a lot going on inside. They often ignore the messages.

Try this: “put your bottom line up front,” “be specific,” “brief people on what they need to do,” “provide an opportunity to ask questions,” “give people a reason to do what you ask,” “tell them what’s in it for them,” “make it easy to comply,” “set a good example,” and “follow up tactfully.” That’s a brief overview of the book contents.

Yesterday, a co-worker asked me to read an email she prepared to send to a manager on a unique problem a customer has reported for six months. My colleague spent a good 40 minutes trying to be clear about the need for help and how bad it was that we were not getting the problem resolved. It was clear by reading the first sentence that a busy person, the person she was sending it to, could easily skim over the purpose of the email and ignore the request for help. My co-worker could have written the email in 10 minutes if she simply applied the basics presented in this book.

Writing to get action has changed. You need this guide to get yourself back in the game and achieve the results you want.
