"The Blair Witch Project" of Personal Finance

This book is a bit rough around the edges. It could use an extra round of proofreading and style pruning. But don't let that discourage you from reading it, because in it you will find a true life story of an immigrant to the United States, whose dreams and financial insecurities had led him to a 13 year-long journey to build a million dollar "cushion".

And boy, was it a hard road. The beauty of this book is that it does not try to gloss over it. Everything is on display, sometimes maybe even unintentionally - after all, the author's main goal was to teach you how to make money, not to show what it really takes. Somehow it reminded me of Indy movies like the one mentioned in the title. They are not always pretty to look at - they are realistically scary. And this book goes step further - it is real, and it is about the fears of our lives.

Depression and perseverance, delusions and personal sacrifices... Making a million bucks is still not that easy in America! And once you made it, another question arises - was that a solution to your issues? Time will tell.

It would be awesome to read the family's point of view on the same story some day. I bet it would make a hilarious read to compare their version to this one.

Personal journey to accruing a million dollars in 10+ years

It is rare to see a book addressing one of the big no-no's in corporate America - salaries.
Sure, many large companies are frequently in the news discussing exorbitant and extravagant salaries and/or bonuses for C-level executives, and how people with a salary of just one dollar end-up earning millions annually in bonuses. But few books describe how having a regular salary can be the base for accruing a million dollar fortune.
This book describes in detail the author’s personal journey. How he and his spouse were able to accrue a nice round number in savings, had clearly defined goals, how they devised a plan to achieve those goals, yet retained the flexibility to adjust to changing markets. And, of course, luck comes into play as well - being there at the right moment.
But the book also sheds light on the missteps and potential downfalls along the road. Will he be able to sustain his freedom for work after retiring in his early forties? No one can predict. But the journey to achieve the round number is well documented and is an interesting case study in how long term goals can be achieved.

Specialist but great if you need it

This is a somewhat specialised book that will serve its professional audience well, yet it is a shame that the average reader will probably never see it.

What makes a great retail display at a store tick is the essential message of this book, looking at how a strong visual product identity and placement is used to reel the customer in. Of course, from the other side, it would be good to show the typical shopper just how much thought can be involved and just how little trickery is employed.

The author provides a comprehensive step-by-step guide to developing and launching a national in-store merchandising strategy and nothing is left to chance in this information-packed, yet relatively slim volume. Mixing best practice and real world experience together, a book like this could be required reading for even the most junior of retail employees. Sure, there may be a fair bit that is of strategic significance to the senior executive, yet letting general retail staff understand a bit of the rhyme and reason behind the displays and why there can often be an overload of small rules and regulations wouldn’t hurt. There is a method to everything and nothing should be left to chance.

One of the pre-publicity comments for this book describes the issue perfectly: “At the end of the 10,000-mile supply chain, it all comes down to the final six feet. This is where visual merchandising takes over.” That really does bring matters into focus. With ever-greater competition from online vendors, retail outlets really need to squeeze every last bit out of their physical presence and grab the customer’s attention.

Worth it!

I've read similar books that sport titles like "make __ per week/month!" Sometimes those seem quite impossible... but this is definitely a solid plan. Granted, it's not a "get rich quick!" plan, but it does have tools, advice, and tips on how to get there. You won't be able to get there without working, but it is possible to get there. In a concise format, Gerry Marrs gives us all his insight on starting your own business with a very low startup cost, and how to make it successful. This is definitely worth a read.

If You Could Only Read ONE Book On Investments, This Is It

Eleven years ago, I retired from a successful, 30 year career in financial services, the last 20 as a Financial Consultant for two major Wall Street firms. Now, I manage my own portfolio in retirement. This is the best book on investments that I have ever read and I have read many of them. There is really too much to comment on for a concise review, since there is so much wisdom and knowledge packed in "Random Walk's" 447 pages. All I can say is that it is written in a very engaging style and it has so many take-aways that any individual investor can use to great advantage in their own investing and financial planning.

I do have one major area of disagreement. In my experience, most investors need the advice and counsel of an investment professional. We all need someone to check our egos, challenge our assumptions, and to be a voice of reason that fights the emotions of fear and greed that can consume us at market tops and market bottoms and cause us to make bad decisions. Maybe it is a fee only adviser, maybe it is a low fee money manager that uses an index fund, MPT, random walk approach. I understand that several of the discounters are testing such services.

So, read this book, then take notes and apply its lessons to your portfolio. If you don't understand parts of it, then educate yourself.

Great book, but not much changed from previous edition. If you have the 10th edition, save your money.

Great book, as always, but you can't really call this a revised edition when the only thing changed is an additional selection about "smart-beta". If you have the 2012 tenth edition, save your money and research "smart-beta" on the internet.

Thank God for Active Traders

I have no beef against the active traders. Maybe I have a little pity for them, since half of them have to lose money if the market’s a zero-sum game. That’s more than half, once you start to factor in fees.

I have long ago realized that though I am interested in the workings of the market, I am not going to delve to the minutiae of companies and different trades and try to be smarter than someone else on the other side who thinks he’s doing the same thing. Nope. Malkiel and Bogle figured out a way I could get away with making the most return possible with the least effort possible - indexing.

Basically this book is a defense of the efficient market hypotheses, or at least part of it. As I understand it, there are two parts to the EMF. One is that the price is always right. So that there’s no such thing as a bubble ever because all the valuations of the market price of securities are representative of their underlying value. The other part is that there’s no free lunch. Or basically arbitrage opportunities may exist, but they are not predictable nor do they persist. I think that the second part is more true than the first, and that’s what this book really digs into, showing you that there are no persistent ways to beat the market. If that’s true, then the best way to consistently make money is to just buy the market. Thankfully there are financial instruments that make that possible - and they’re where I have my money. Cards on the table, this book is just a giant exercise in confirmation bias for me, but it is confirmation bias well done in clear writing with a well-organized structure. I read this burning through the pages on a long holiday weekend, and I wanted to send it to my parents. I thought again about that. It might be too late for them since I don’t know their financial positions. Maybe I’ll send it to my siblings.

A final note, though. Even though Malkiel shows convincingly that there is no way to beat the the market, there is an odd paradox. For the market to work, it needs people out there who think that they can beat the market. Even if the best strategy is to buy and hold a low cost index fund, if everyone did that liquidity and price discovery would drop. What someone following Malkiel needs is people who think he is wrong and that they can generate “alpha” (returns above the market). This goes against the second part of the EMF, where arbitrage opportunities can’t exist because if you have a way to beat the market, then everyone has a way to beat the market and then once everyone is in, no one has a way to beat the market.

I NAILED IT!

Wow, it's been more than 7 years since my last interview and I dreaded the questions they may throw at me. This work book taught me how to anticipate the annoying interview questions that we all hate and shock them with my answers. The author provided the skills necessary for me to interview my prospective employer....AND I GOT THE JOB!

I GOT the job!! And I owe it to this book!

This book is a must have for anyone preparing for an interview, regardless of the industry. I have always been so nervous about interviewing and felt that I never prepared correctly, even though I knew I was qualified for the job. I have left many interviews cringing at the thought of my performance and the answers I stumbled over. I bought this book months ago, just to have on hand, since I was beginning to consider looking for a new job. I am SO thankful I did this, as an amazing opportunity came up quickly and I only had 36 hours to prepare for the interview. Not ideal, but this workbook made it possible! It allowed me to focus in on what is most important and helped me to organize my thoughts & my example stories in a way that I could memorize the important details, and also use the same story for a variety of interview questions. It would be ideal to spend much more time on each section of this book than I was able to, but this is also a great workbook to use when you have little prep time. I suggest it for anyone who is even considering the possibility of a job change...you just never know when that opportunity might present itself! Regardless of the short time I had to prep, I nailed the interview! It was a LONG interview too, about 90 minutes, and I felt prepared for every question they threw at me:) I owe it to this book for allowing me to prepare myself the smart way!! I can honestly say I will never dread the interview process again and feel as though I've conquered something I have feared all of my life. Much thanks to the author, Christine Hutchins!

When it comes to fostering trust with people, there are some things we need to pay attention to and this book explains that brilliantly. About the Author
Jeremy du Plessis, CMT, FSTA, trained as an automotive engineer, then an economist, but gave them both up to become a Technical Analyst. In 1983 he founded Indexia Research and pioneered the development of PC-based technical analysis software with the Indexia range of technical analysis systems. During the 1980s he developed a number of technical tools and indicators under the banner of Indexia, such as the Indexia Market Tracker and Indexia moving averages, which are still used in software to this day. He is an expert on Point and Figure charts, and the Indexia software was the first PC-based system to draw them correctly and clearly in the early 1980s. He lectures the Point and Figure module for the Society of Technical Analysts and sets the Point and Figure syllabus for the International Federation of Technical Analysts. He has taught Technical Analysis, and in particular Point and Figure, to thousands of professional traders and investors over the last 30 years. In 2001, after running Indexia Research for nearly 20 years, he agreed to merge the company with Updata Ltd, where he is now head of Technical Analysis and Product Development, and the designer of the Updata PC and smartphone technical analysis software. He is a Fellow of the Society of Technical Analysts (FSTA) in the UK, and a member of the American Market Technicians Association (MTA) as well as the American Association of Professional Technical Analysts (AAPTA). He is a holder of the Chartered Market Technician (CMT) designation awarded by the MTA. Jeremy is also the author of The Definitive Guide to Point and Figure.

Needlessly Complex

If you are a technician ( as I am ) , and enjoy the minutiae, the "hows and whys" of every detail on how P&F charts are created ( which I don't ) , the book might serve a purpose . If you strongly believe that overlaying RSI, Moving Averages, and Volume charts on a P&F chart to establish correlation is remotely meaningful, then this is the book for you !
This book feeds the theory of those who feel that there is some secret "system" to be found if you keep on adding more and more data.

This author's next book might as well be about correlating P&F to world events . I am writing this review to counter the positive reviews by others which encouraged me to cough up the dough for this overpriced book ...

Eliminate Market Noise

Point and Figure charting is appealing because it eliminates market noise and draws your attention to the trend. This is why P&F charts have been used since the 19th century. Of course technology has changed since the 19th century and traders no longer make Xs and Os on the back of trade tickets. They have computers to generate the charts and Jeremy do Plessis explains how to apply technology to P&F charts. Some of the applications are intuitive but Donchian channels, one of the most effective trend following systems ever published, are far from intuitive. This book explains a simple approach to implementing this strategy. There are also other strategies explained and every trader should be able to find ways to profits in this book.

A New Look at a 130-Year Old Technique

Point and Figure (P&F) is one of the oldest tools of technical analysis. It’s been used since at least the 1880s yet the technique works just as well today as it did 130 years ago. The basics of P&F haven’t changed over time but computers and software have allowed skilled analysts to derive more information from the columns of Xs and Os that are found on P&F charts. In this book, du Plessis demonstrates how to apply 20th century tools like Bollinger Bands®, Donchian channels and Welles Wilder’s parabolic stop and reverse strategy to P&F charts.

P&F works, probably because few people look at it. The techniques in this book can improve on the strategy and give traders an edge in the markets.
