Good Primer...
By D. Kanigan
Author sets the stage by explaining the importance of taking accountability (e.g., make choices, not excuses; moving beyond the excuse; excuses weaken us and perceptions of us). He then proceeds on identifying and elaborating on Five "Accountabilities" that are shared by successful people and organizations.

FIRST ACCOUNTABILITY: DOING THE RIGHT THINGS [understanding what makes you successful; what you are trying to accomplish by when (your strategic intent)]; knowing your strengths and weaknesses]

SECOND ACCOUNTABILITY: "MANAGING YOUR SPACE" [Assess priorities; eliminate initiatives not focused on achieving strategic intent ("adding by subtracting"); allocate resources; how you choose to spend your time]

THIRD ACCOUNTABILITY: "MANAGING YOUR PROCESS" [don't abdicate ownership - be proactively accountable; assess process improvements; deal with obstacles; evaluate "misses"]

FOURTH ACCOUNTABILITY: ESTABLISHING THE RIGHT EXPECTATIONS" [benchmark in industry; set stretch targets that are achievable; communicate why achieving targets is important]

FIFTH ACCOUNTABILITY: CONTRIBUTING TO YOUR RELATIONSHIPS" [contribute to personal relationships with family, friends, business colleagues; most effective business people are led by great networkers; network by giving; making a difference to community; eco-friendliness]

The final chapter is on How to Creating a Culture of Accountability including but not limited to: Being Clear; Educating People; Rewarding the Right Process; Letting People Play to Their Strengths; Focusing on Values First.

* This book is a quick read which sensitizes the reader to important accountability topics

* Author interviewed 50 "Accountability Masters" from six continents including senior executives, academics and athletes. Each chapter includes their observations on the topic. Anecdotes and examples were generally very good.

* Author shares some valuable examples from personal business experience (window manufacturing) and also some "well-worn" examples (Southwest Airlines, Apple, Apollo 13 mission, Donald Trump?).

* Scope of subject matter includes personal accountabilities for individual growth and required accountabilities for organizational growth. Some were very effective ("Doing the Right Things" - "Managing Your Space") - Others were presented at 40,000 feet and in my opinion were too broad and ambitious - and impacted the effectiveness and flow of the book. For example, the final chapter on how to create a culture of accountability had 15 separate requirements to do so. The book may have been more useful for me if subject matter were more focused on the individual or the organization and not both.

My favorite passages:

"...Four Hundred years ago, William Shakespeare wrote these words: "This above all to thine own self be true, and it must follow, as the night the day, though canst not then be false to any man" (Hamlet)"

"There always comes a point where we have a choice. We can focus on the excuse, The Story - all the reasons why things shouldn't (or didn't) happen - or we can focus on the finish line. When we choose to focus our attention on the excuses, we take ourselves out of the game."

"I have tried to spend a third of my life earning, a third of my life learning, and a third of my life serving - and looking back, I realize that I've gotten the most profound happiness and satisfaction from the serving part of that equation. Not everyone who is materially successful is happy. Once you look at those who are both materially successful and happy, what you will find is that their happiness is almost always rooted in their ability to serve - their ability to build bridges and connect with other people and benefit those people." Quality, Ernest Advice
By Russell W Lookadoo, SPHR, CCP
As the President and Chief Strategist for HRchitecture, a firm dedicated to helping small business owners achieve success through their employees, I am continually reading business, leadership and self help books. Quite frankly I find most authors run out of there ideas at about 1/2 of the way through the book. Sam excels in writing a book in this genre that is a page turner. His concise, but entertaining style of writing conveys a very powerful measure with great economy of words, and therefore a great value for my time. My mantra with my coaching and consulting clients is frequently "FAA" Focus, Alignment and Accountability. Sam's book is the best I have read on the subject of accountability. Additionally, his first point regarding alignment is key to the outcome of a no excuses business, and life. The substitutions of the term choices for excuses is extremely powerful and brilliant. But my intent here is not to give a book report on the content, but to endorse your decision to purchase this book for yourself, and for those you wish to see live a life of No More Excuses. His five steps for crating this culture are on the mark, and his sharing of interviews from a diverse range of successful people make the read easy and enjoyable. The last step is an unexpected, but wonderful twist. Having heard Sam discuss his book, I can attest personally that the writing is sincere and genuine which adds to its credibility. So, No More Excuses, buy this book, buy many copies of this book to give to those you care about.
