Packed with stories and practices, "Anticipate" provides proven techniques for looking ahead and exploring many plausible futures--including the author's trademarked FuturePriming process, which helps distinguish signal from noise. You will discover how to: Tap into your imagination and open yourself to the unconventional - Become better at seeing things early - Frame the big-picture view that provides direction for the future - Communicate your vision in a way that engages others and provokes action - And more When you anticipate change before your competitors, you create enormous strategic advantage. From the Inside Flap

What enables great corporate leaders to detect signals that their industry, or perhaps the entire world, is about to change? How are they able to place their companies in a position to capitalize on that change? And how can you become one of those extraordinary people?

It boils down to one word--vision. Leaders who lacked it have often guided their companies to obsolescence and failure. The rare leaders who cultivated a strong vision have disrupted industries, created new ones, and remade the world.

For example, you may never have heard of Ingvar Kamprad, but his vision of design furniture that should not just be accessible to the "happy few" led to the global success of Ikea. John F. Kennedy's 1961 vision that America could put a man on the moon "by the end of the decade" led to just that--as well as new products ranging from LED lights to artificial limbs.

The recent economic boom in Dubai has occurred thanks to a sheikh who realized the region's oil supply would eventually run out. So he developed a vision for today's Dubai, a modern city that focuses on service industries as different as high finance and high-end tourism.

Fortunately, visionary leadership is never an accident of birth. This book will teach you the practices that can make you a successful visionary, such as:

* How to grow your ability to detect change early

* How to connect the dots among emerging trends to develop a coherent and robust vision

* Ways to create scenarios that help you design interruptive strategies, products, and services that are game changers

* Practical ideas and exercises you can incorporate into your daily routine to nurture your visionary side

* How to speak like a visionary leader, present your ideas more colorfully, and ignite your followers emotionally so they'll put their best efforts into a commonly shared cause

You'll also discover how to integrate early signs of change into a long-range perspective. You'll learn how to develop a logically consistent "story" that serves your vision. You'll find out how to maximize the chances that your vision will work. And you'll learn ways to avoid the dangerous pitfall of tunnel vision.

Change will always be coming. It's key, then, to see it as far off as possible and so maximize the amount of time you have to prepare for it before it arrives. Anticipate will give you that long-range vision.

Rob-Jan de Jong is one of five faculty members in Wharton's flagship executive program "Global Strategic Leadership." A sought-after international consultant, he helps leaders and companies anticipate the future and arrive at winning strategies. His clients include Philips, ING, HCL, Total Oil, and other top organizations and business schools. He lives in Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

From the Back Cover

If you become a great leader in any field--from business, to politics, to computer science --the one adjective that will almost certainly describe your success is "visionary." But although just about everyone acknowledges that leaders need to have vision, few people know how to develop and nurture it.

This book will teach you how. You'll discover how to:

* spot new developments with strong disruptive potential

* avoid gross misjudgments caused by failure to see changes on the horizon and to realize how they will impact your business

* hone your skills for determining how onrushing changes fit into the big picture

* turn your insights into a compelling story that inspires your followers--and how to communicate it most powerfully

Most important, you'll learn how to apply your visionary skills to become a better leader, including ways you can inspire others to share, support, and grow your vision.

Today's great leaders will be remembered as people who became agents of profound and enriching change--interrupters rather than followers. Become one of those people and you might be the brains behind the next Ikea, or Apple. Your key to that opportunity could be in these pages.

How to capture a compelling vision
By John Gibbs
It requires courage to voice your vision, to stand up for it, and to battle the resistance you’ll inevitably face in return, because an effective vision by definition has to be original, and therefore to some degree be provocative, maybe even slightly controversial, according to Rob-Jan de Jong in this book. That is one of the reasons why leaders are often reluctant to espouse a compelling vision, and yet vision casting is one of the key components of effective leadership.

The book aims to explain how anyone can become more visionary, by describing:

• Visionary content, including techniques for imagining a range of plausible future scenarios
• Visionary practices, including methods for seeing things early and connecting the dots
• Visionary self, including ways of developing your own integrity, credibility and authenticity as a leader
• Visionary communication, including how to harness the power of language and how to use stories to make your message more accessible

As the author states at the beginning of the book, vision is one of the key attributes required of leaders, and yet there are very few resources available which explain how to get and communicate a vision. In my opinion this book succeeds in breaking down the visioning process into achievable steps. It won’t turn you into an inspiring orator overnight, but it will give you a manageable path for finding, capturing, embodying and communicating a vision for your organization or cause.

A True Contribution to Everyday Leadership!
By Jeanine Jansen
Everyday leadership: this is what Rob-Jan’s book contributes to. Not only the brilliant minds behind Ikea and the Sydney Opera House, but everyone is able to become a successful visionary.

The first part of the book brings forward what shapes a strong vision and how you tap into your imagination. Then “Anticipate” goes into some actual practices and approaches to develop a personal vision. After, the ‘Visionary’ Self comes to live with typical behaviours and skills we need. Finally, having a vision is worthless when unable to mobilize your followers. “Anticipate” brings an extra dimension in how to communicate your long-range story in an engaging and lasting way.

Throughout the book you’ll find vivid examples and exercises. Also, I love it when an author offers extra resources. On www.visionarycapacity.com we can continue to play with as many as 25 fun, helpful and original practices. Very accessible and inspiring!
