Great content, in a story format, for busting through common non-profit roadblocks.

Tom Okarma knows non-profit leadership and the pitfalls that accompany doing good while building a vibrant organization. Twenty years ago, when starting to launch my non-profit organization (NPO), I wish someone had given me a book like this one. If I had, chances are I would have stepped around a few landmines and saved time, money and a bunch of headaches. For me, this book is a great gift for any new non-profit executive, board member, or leader in a fledgling organization. It is a book full of good content, the story format is easy to read and there are simple steps to help you break through the issues that bog you and your organization down.

This book could not have come at a better time! As I read through the real life ...

This book could not have come at a better time! As I read through the real life story of someone with mounds of passion exactly like me who started an impactful non-profit, I realized I was not alone. The struggles I currently face (especially with our board of directors) were verbatim to the ones detailed in the first few chapters of the book. I felt like Tom Okarma had spent the last 5 years with me in order to write this manual for how to deal with the real problems I live with on a daily basis. As I moved into the chapters that were filled with practical solutions, I began to feel hope and realized that the light at the end of my tunnel is brighter and more of a reality than I thought. Many of the concepts and ideas for building a foundation and strategy planning have been communicated to me over the years but not in the comprehensive and holistic way they are in this wonderful book. There are step by step processes and tools that can be put to use right away. I am filled with confidence and knowledge that can help us build the
infrastructure of support needed for The Sports Shed to grow and sustain! Thank you for a great book Tom.

An outstanding love story

An outstanding love story, this book is a revolution. It should have been written a long time ago, and now we have it!

Jack did not create a non-fiction book. Nor did he write a fiction book. Instead, he created a unique reading experience that unifies a tough business challenge (sales) with a soft and purely emotional topic (love).

Jack is not the first to point out the importance of emotions for successful sales. But he is the first one who does it with such humour, passion and conviction that I could not help to suck in the entire book and to immediately imagine my own sales challenges being like a love affair.

A Sale Is A Love Affair, carefully read and applied, will be an epiphany for many sales professionals. But it doesn’t stop there. The best part is that this book sticks with the reader. It is the antithesis of any book about “sales methods.” Instead, it transmits stories to the reader that everyone can connect with: love stories. Consequently, it has the power to transform entire sales teams and dramatically increases sales success.

I highly recommend this book to all people in any sales situation, as well as to any business leader of any type of organisation. Because of its entertaining style, it is also a perfect gift for colleagues and business partners.

A Sale Is A Love Affair is edgy, almost outrageous and beyond beautiful. That’s what makes it so profound and so human.

Jack smacks you in the head in a raw way and touches your heart in a spiritual way. He shows us how to honor ourselves first, which enables us to deeply connect with customers and drive more sales.

The book is loaded with anecdotes and stories that are charged with emotion and energy.

As a dating and love coach, it’s clear to me that he also shows us how to connect more deeply in our romantic relationships… and that love and sales are not just about influencing minds, but also about winning hearts.

Brilliant Insights

This book is filled with many brilliant insights into the world of luxury on how and why we consume it. In reality I will never truly be finished reading it becasue I'll refer back to it again and again. As the Beauty Director of SELF magazine I'm continually ideating around the world of beautiful things; dissecting, editing, and producing content that hopes to deliver a reprieve from the banal yet is firmly planted in everyday experiences. Luxury Essentials dives deeply into those topics through statistics and anecdotal evidence that is both thought provoking and invaluable. In particular the concepts of surprise management and dream maintenance are fascinating. I highly recommend Luxury Essentials to anyone intrigued by the world of luxury and beauty.

Definitely a must read!

This book is an excellent analysis of the luxury goods phenomenon and a must read for anyone interested in the luxury market segment. Langer identifies hidden aspects of luxury and systematically discusses these aspects under the heading of "added luxury value". He provides convincing examples and data. On that basis he comes to a rather narrow market definition of luxury, characterised by unique market conditions. This book, no doubt, will be of great value in understanding the luxury goods market and should not be missed.

Mr Langer guides the inexperienced reader (as I was) through the logical parameters influencing the Mechanics of the approach to Luxury with ease. A reading that was risking to be too "accademic" becomes progressively more and more pleasant an intriguing. A completely new and refreshing view on a topic never before (to my knowledge) investigated with such depth.

Your One-Stop-Shop for Credit Knowledge

This little book is designed as a one-stop-shop of both compiled resources, as well as comprehensive instruction, for repairing credit, building credit, and even for upgrading credit to purchase assets – a vital tool of wealth building. The book is impressively researched, and would absolutely make a valuable and often-used desk reference for anyone serious and hands on about their credit, even for those too shy to take the author up on her offer for a one-on-one consultation through her website.

As self-help books go, I like it because it is strongly fact-focused and information-driven with little fluff to pad it out; what fluff that is present is used to personalize the material to keep it from reading dry like a phone book (which would be easy for this kind of material), and the author is very good at using her writing voice in the kind of conversational tone needed to pull that off.

A great find, and highly recommended if getting a solid control of your finances, so you will always float above any economic troubles our greater society may experience, is a goal of yours. And of course it should be.

The author makes an extremely good point right from the beginning--it's madness to insist on making our own mistakes rather than learning from the mistakes of others. In this spirit, the author offers her own real life experiences as an inspiration for how far one can fall, and yet still find ways to recover, and even thrive.

She guides the reader past the unfortunate idea most of us have that credit is bad, synonymous with that unappealing specter that haunts many of us: debt. Instead, she shows how healthy and properly maintained credit can be used to boost one's position in life, giving them access to resources they would be hard put to achieve on their own and the ability to generate income independent of the reader's ability to work...an asset in an uncertain world where anything can and will happen.

Food for thought

I'll confess that I'm not really into nonfiction books and definitely not ones about one's credit history. Obviously, a book like BETTER THAN CREDIT REPAIR isn't my usual reading fare. That said, I'll be mulling over the concepts presented in this book for a while. The author did a good job introducing and explaining the ins and outs of credit reports in a way I hadn't heard before. There could have been more detail in certain sections of this book, but the information was basic enough to keep the average reader from becoming totally overwhelmed.

Looking forward to what is next for this author.

Feathers and Bricks

What would you think of a scientific field that assumes away one of the most basic
aspects of the natural world that the field hopes to understand? Probably not much.
Yet modern macroeconomics, astonishingly, assumes away the existence of money,
banking, and the rest of the financial sector. As a consequence, macroeconomists
didn’t foresee the great crash of 2008–2009 because the crash originated in the
financial sector, which, according to their predominant model, didn’t exist.
That’s not as crazy as it sounds. Newtonian and Einsteinian physics assume
that there’s no friction. Even Galileo, when he compared the speed of dropped
feathers and bricks a half century before Newton, knew to allow for friction
and concluded that gravity acted equally on the two objects, the difference in
their rate of fall being due entirely to resistance from the atmosphere.

A World without Friction

Why assume away something important, such as friction? Simplifying nature
in this way creates a base case from which deviations can be measured and
explained. Feathers encounter considerable friction. If we didn’t know the rate at
which bricks fall, we wouldn’t be able to measure the greater impact of friction
on feathers. Likewise, the economy is full of frictions: Search and transaction
costs prevent markets from being perfect or close to perfect, while decisions are
made using incomplete information by people who are less than wholly rational.
Macroeconomics, then, has evolved in a way that tends to set aside such
distractions as money and the financial sector because it seeks to explain, in as
simple terms as possible, the functioning of the real economy—the economy of
factories, trucks, natural resources, labor contracts, patents, and so forth. The
financial economy, from this viewpoint, is a sideshow involving claims on the
real economy—stocks, bonds, commodity futures contracts—but not the real
economic goods themselves.

Is Money a Veil or a Lubricant?

In this sense, “money is a veil,” as Arthur Pigou famously said, channeling
John Stuart Mill as quoted in the epigraph. (Pigou 1949; Mill 1848, moreover,

David Hume’s 1752 essay “Of Money.” Money as a veil is a
core concept of classical economics, but it has leaked through to Keynesian
economics too and is basically correct: Without money and finance, we’d have
a barter economy that would suffer from huge friction costs but that would not
otherwise be very different.) In other words, the use of money as a medium of
exchange obscures the real economic phenomena beneath. If that is the case,
let’s remove the veil and study the real economy.

But financial institutions and instruments do exist, creating and trading
them makes up a significant fraction of total economic activity, and they need
to be explained and understood. They are best understood as a form of infrastructure,
without which the rest of the economy would struggle to function.

A City without Water

In that sense, financial institutions are like water utilities. If you planned a city
without a water utility, you could assume one would spring up to fill the unmet
need. But you could make some spectacular mistakes, such as deciding that the
ideal place for the city—for other reasons—was on a mountaintop in the arid
state of Utah. A water utility will not “spring up” there. Likewise, if farmers
need to borrow to plant in the spring so they can harvest in the fall and repay
the loans, you could “assume a bank.” The need for a bank in such a situation is
so obvious that investors would be falling all over each other to establish one.
In a modern economy, which is much more complex than a farming economy,
the need for financial institutions is even greater, and the instruments
they use include equities, derivatives, and every manner of loan or bond. Yet
it’s still possible to model the economy without a financial sector, and in order
to pierce the monetary veil and see through to the real assets and transactions
behind it, macroeconomists have generally done so. For reasons of mathematical
tractability, their models—especially the so-called dynamic stochastic general
equilibrium (DSGE) models—have staying power.

But having assumed away the financial sector, DSGE models and their kin
did not and could not foresee the crash of 2008, nor did they even assess the
possibility of such a crash. They could not see that the mechanism that prevents
the economy from seizing up because of transaction costs (say, from having to
barter) might stop working from time to time and cease to provide capital—or,
in extremis, cash from ATMs. In the wake of the global financial crisis, it became
evident that macroeconomists needed a new kind of economic modeling that took
account of the need for liquidity and the existence of financial frictions.
Conventional financial economics, too, has been neglectful of the effects
of illiquidity on capital markets and on investor behavior. Most of modern
portfolio theory—and most empirical research in finance—assumes that one
can buy or sell as much of a security as one wants to at a price close to that
of the previous trade. When this condition fails to hold, markets can behave
in ways that classic portfolio theory does not predict. By adding illiquidity to
the bundle of characteristics or risks that investors must deal with, research in
finance moves closer to the real world and becomes more useful.

A New Economics That Addresses Liquidity and
Financial Frictions

At these points of inflection, where traditional economics and finance are joined
by the study of liquidity and other financial frictions, lie the new frontiers of
economics, as described in David Adler’s lucid book. In an unexpected marriage
of macroeconomics and finance, a group of pioneering researchers is creating
a new body of economic theory. This school of thought treats financial frictions,
including illiquidity, in the spirit that modern physics embraces when
it acknowledges the friction that causes feathers and bricks to fall at different
speeds. Adler, a nonfiction author (Adler 2009), reporter, and documentary
producer—who has already written a CFA Institute Research Foundation literature
review on this topic (Adler 2012)—now turns his attention to explaining,
in accessible language and without formulas, both the conceptual foundations
and the practical applications of this new turn in economics.
Adler’s exploration of the changes in economics wrought by the global
financial crisis and stock market crash is much more than a summary of new
theories. The research he describes has direct application to public policy. A new
word—“macroprudential”—describes policies, practices, and regulations that
are intended to protect the financial system and not just a particular financial
institution. A deep understanding of the concepts in this book is necessary for
deciding what macroprudential policies to implement.

Investors, too, benefit from knowing what policymakers, financial institution
executives, and economic researchers are learning about liquidity and
financial frictions. By positioning themselves on the frontier of this change in
thinking, investors can improve their decisions about what asset mix to hold
and what securities to invest in. Because of the many uses to which knowledge
about liquidity and financial frictions can be put and because of the luminous
manner in which the author makes difficult ideas simple, the CFA Institute

The Best Book I've Read on Marketing a Small Business

It was the endorsements on the back of the book by owners of actual hardware stores like Ziegler’s Ace Hardware in Elgin, IL, and Mazzone’s Hardware in Brooklyn that convinced me to take a chance on this book, but their strong recommendations didn’t prepare me for just how valuable and *practical* this book is. I found it particularly helpful to read about how to make my overall marketing strategy and individual promotions fit my unique business and brand; how to make computers and the internet work for me and my promotions instead of draining my time, energy, and money; and how to deal with competitors who are cut-throat, resource-deep, or unethical. This is by far the best book I’ve read on marketing a small business. My recommendation is: Don’t pass up this resource on how to survive and thrive in what is, at best, a very difficult marketplace for most if not all of us. So much better to discover all these great ideas from this book than to discover them after a competitor buys the book.

This book was enormously helpful to me after I graduated and was looking to begin my career. At my University I had utilized the career center, they taught me how to draft a resume and some basic interview skills, but I didn’t have any real world experience. I spent countless hours applying for jobs online, spinning my wheels, and never hearing back from the companies. Mathies’ book highlights how to be effective in your job search and the biggest component of being effective I found was networking. Using Mathies’ techniques for tracking contact information and recording follow up action items I started to gain traction in my job search. One main concept from the book that rang especially true for me was that it is often someone in your secondary network that is able to help you get a job. It may not be your mother’s, friend’s, brother who doesn’t work in your field of work that can help you get a job but he may know someone (now in your secondary network) that has an open position. It is so important to network with everyone you can because you never know where their connections may lead you.

Solid advice that helps bridge the gap from the fantasyland of college to the real world

As a parent of a college senior who is eager to land his first real job, I found Mike's book to be very helpful as it reinforces many key "do's and don'ts" young people entering the workplace may not observe or follow. Our family dynamics are such that our kids sometimes embrace the advice of others more closely than if they were receive similar input from me or my wife. Mike's book serves as a great surrogate as it contains a clear roadmap that's actionable and is brought to life by great examples. As well, the book's condensed length is perfect for full-time college students who don't have the time to read a drawn-out novel. Most important, it's written in a tone that imparts solid wisdom without being condescending to its intended audience. Thanks Mike!

In a succinct format and a conversational, yet authoritative, tone Mathies has produced a go-to manual for the recent grad or even more mature job seeker who has been out of the workforce for awhile. Like a trusted family friend or favorite uncle, he offers no-nonsense advice in an organized and easy to follow way. While How to Win Your First Great Job is particularly helpful for those seeking employment in the private sector, even those looking in more unconventional fields will find pearls of wisdom in this gem of a book.
