Not Your Father's Financial Planner or Financial Planning Book and That's a Good Thing

Sophia Bera is definitely “not your father’s financial planner”—as she proudly proclaims in her introduction, on her website and in person (I have met her on a few occasions)—and that is a good thing. And after reading, What You Should Have Learned About Money But Never Did, I honestly could not think of a more perfect and spot-on title for this book and the message within.

Without getting into too much personal detail, I’m proudly part of Gen Y and wish that I would have known the information that Sophia shares about ten years ago (and even before) when I first entered my twenties. Now that I am on the verge of concluding the first year of my thirties this book helped me to reflect upon what I have learned about money and personal finances over the past decade and realize that there is still more to learn.

This book provides a great introduction, foundation and framework, plus lots of resources for those learning to navigate their personal finances in an uncertain world. It also serves as a reminder, refreshment and check list for those that think they know what they are doing—like me.

That said, the most important and valuable information contained within this book is not the how-to-do or what-to-do but the why-to-do. Sophia challenges readers with deeper questions than just how much money do you want to make and save, but why do you want to build wealth? What type of life do you want to live? What is really important to you?

Sophia is definitely not your father’s financial planner and this is definitely not your father’s financial planning book. If you are looking for something different than the typical “fatherly advice” when it comes to financial planning then this is where to find it.

Rare wisdom in a sea of counter-productive financial chatter

I could tell this book was going to be different from page one. I've spent the past two decades reading personal finance magazines, managing my own investments, doing my own taxes, and just generally avoiding the broken-record strategies of the financial industry. And it's hard for me to be impressed by a Certified Financial Planner like Sophia Bera because I saw a lot of them come and (thankfully) go in my ten years working at a huge wealth management firm.

But this book - and especially the author - offer up well-explained ways for just about anyone to align their money with their values and, best of all, use this new self-awareness to make some big dreams a reality. I was nodding my head a lot while reading, especially this great passage: "Spending money becomes an issue when it's spent mindlessly on things that don't bring us happiness, or when we spend money fruitlessly in an effort to solve problems that are internal."

From mindsets to toolkits to practical tactics, the book is as short and easy a read as it's long on real knowledge and the right dose of unconventional thinking.

Must read for anyone in their 20-30s

Sophia has a way of writing about finances in a way that just makes sense, which can be difficult to do when it comes to finances. Her approach to financial planning is practical, relatable and just plain useful. I love that it's not full of a bunch of extra fluff - literally everything you read in this book can easily be put into practice in your own life. This book is perfect for anyone who wants to get ahead and learn how to make smart financial decisions from the get-go. I highly recommend Sophia's book for anyone in their 20-30s who wants to learn how to make your money work for you. You won't be disappointed.

A must-read for executives in "retirement" transition and busier than ever

This book is a must read for active executives in the midst of a "retirement" transition and finding themselves as busy as they've ever been. I'm not an HR officer or management coach. I'm a 70 year-old retired hedge fund partner and philanthropist in the process of reshaping my life ... yet again. Though officially retired, I find myself with many private investment and philanthropic management responsibilities. They all pose challenges I've faced successfully before, but now they arise in new ways and contexts. My sense for some time has been I'm missing something. Well, it turns out I was. I was missing what "Missing Conversations -- 9 Questions All Leaders Should Ask Themselves" is all about. From the first question, "Who am I as a leader?" to the last, "How well connected am I to those around me?", authors Theurer and Jelks take an active executive step by step through as thorough and constructive a personal examination of who they are and what they are, as can be found anywhere. Great Conversations to Enhance Leadership!

Missing Conversations is an insightful, practical book clearly based on the authors’ deep experience interacting with a wide variety of leaders. It is easy to read and engaging, leaving me with the sense that I was actively participating in dialog with them. I felt compelled to complete the assessments and other activities, as they are presented in an inviting way. Having those elements in context within each chapter, rather than relegated to the end of the book, is a great relief. The takeaways section summarizes each conversation effectively, transitioning from rich content to realistic action steps. Initially, I read the book sequentially, then found myself referring back to review previous topics. Now, having referred my protégés to the book, I am finding it equally effective to select specific conversations, non-sequentially as the authors predicted. I strongly recommend this book to leaders of all levels as an excellent resource for enhancing awareness and improvement of themselves and their upcoming leaders!

Not a typical success book

Stephen Reed's Lean In is not a typical success book. His goal isn't to get rich by selling books that repeat the same old themes--that's obvious, considering the Amazon price for this particular eBook (it was $0.00 when I "bought" it).

In this case, the saying, "You get what you pay for," doesn't hold true. While this short book is repetitive at points, and not all of the tips will work for everyone, Reed has some good, practical advice, and he presents it in a way that's fun to read.

Reed sums up his theme in this sentence: "Don't think that you can wait for retirement to enjoy your life, it may never come."

He tells how he had a series of jobs that ranged from unfulfilling to dreadful, and how he now works for himself doing what he enjoys. He then tells how anyone else can do the same through "small, incremental steps" which can "build up into something wonderful."

Reed's not promoting an easy way to a selfish life of leisure. He's saying that if we can find a way to make a living from what we love, we will be better people all around:

"I am sure that, as I find passion in what I do in my life, I become an even better father, husband, and son."

Down To Earth Practical Guide With Personality!

Lean In is an impressive straight up guide by an author that cleverly uses his "shortcomings" to motivate the hell out of the audience. Reed writes with knowledge, motivation, and an openness that makes you want more.

He flips life interference factors positively so you can rejig your priorities to FEEL happy. I like that!

The author also dabbles into procrastination and passion, explaining in simple terms how you can improve and utilize both.

About the Author

Jeswald W. Salacuse is a professor of law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University. He also teaches executive training programs sponsored by the Harvard Program on Negotiation. He is author of 11 books, including Making Global Deals and The Art of Advice. He lives outside of Boston, MA.

Outstanding

Roger Fisher, Director of the Harvard Negotiation Project and author of Getting to Yes, has written for the book jacket that The Global Negotiator "...is the best book I know to help business negotiators expand their skills to meet the needs of negotiating internationally." It is high praise and well deserved.
The author, Jeswald W. Salacuse, is the Henry J. Braker Professor of Law at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, Tufts University, and a member of the Steering Committee of the Harvard Program on Negotiations. Professor Salacuse has an extensive background in international negotiations. He has participated in negotiations involving persons from over forty countries, spent years living abroad and explored the field of global negotiations through research and teaching involving hundreds of international executives, lawyers and officials.
This is a guidebook about "making, managing, and mending international business transactions" (p.viii). Its aim, Professor Salacuse tells his reader, "...is to equip business executives, students, lawyers and government officials to navigate each of these stages effectively" (p.3).
Unlike most books on the art of negotiating, Professor Salacuse goes far beyond making the deal and gives careful attention to managing and repairing deals once made. It is, therefore, a work with special insight and value for the negotiator. Let us examine some of these insights.
The central issue in global negotiations, Professor Salacuse tells the reader, is about the nature of the deal itself. "Is it a contract or a relationship?" (p. 20).
The answer to this seemingly simple issue should be at the heart of the preparation for any negotiation. Alas, far too often, it is a topic casually addressed by negotiators. Ideally, it should be both a relationship and a contract in most deals.
In fact, however, in American practice the contract often takes the central focus. As unfortunate as this approach may be, its problems are amplified in an international arena in which the goal of a potential partner in a negotiation may be a relationship and the contract is secondary. Neglecting that core difference in expectations may not only destroy the possibility of reaching a deal, but also imperil the success of future fulfillment of any agreement reached by the parties. Without clarity on this matter, any agreement may be founded on the most fatal of flaws: the failure of the parties to have a meeting of the minds.
"A deal is a prediction. A negotiation is always about the future," Professor Salacuse states (p.62). It is a true statement about all deals whether local or global, but particularly significant in the cross-cultural environment.
The wise negotiator recognizes that negotiators are "inherently incapable of predicting all of the events and conditions that may affect their transactions in the future" (p.65). Additionally, due to resource constraints and cultural differences, the understandings and expectations of the parties are rarely capable of being fully captured in the written contract. Given these factors, Salacuse concludes, may be "more realistic to think of the transaction as a continuing negotiation" rather than a deal fixed in time. (pp.185-186).
"Various studies," Professor Salacuse writes, " have found that between 33 percent and 70 percent of international alliances surveyed eventually broke up" (p.194). Given this record, the author approaches international negotiations and agreements as encompassing three distinct, but closely related essential areas: making the deal, managing the deal and mending the deal. His approach is cross-cultural, practical and insightful.
The global negotiator will find a lengthy and thorough guide to preparing and negotiating international agreements. The author takes the reader through such matters as selecting the place for the negotiations to recognizing and managing the many cultural differences that will be encountered and need to be overcome in an international deal. We find advice on handling cultural barriers ranging from concepts of time and differences in styles to the structure of the deal itself.
Additionally, the author examines such critical matters as who's law will apply, dealing with foreign government officials at the table, and the complexities as moving money and sharing risk among the parties. It is a wide-ranging and complete exploration of the field.
Importantly, Professor Salacuse moves from negotiating the deal to examinations of managing and mending international agreements. Treated for clarity as separate sections, these topics are intended as elements to be explored and included in the negotiation of the basic agreement itself. How will the parties manage the relationship is a critical question. There is valuable advice on planning for this process in the second section of his work.

In the last section of his work, the author turns to the third vital area of global negotiations: deal mending and dispute resolution. If we know that disputes and changed circumstances are probable, then prudent negotiators need to include methods of handling these matters in their original agreement.
Professor Salacuse explores three types of renegotiations that are expectable in the life cycle of the deal: post deal, intra deal, extra deal (p.229). He then turns his attention to the need for the parties to plan and incorporate into the deal method for resolving disputes. Here, the author again provides a thorough discussion of the operation, benefits and disadvantages of the international dispute resolution options along a continuum ranging from negotiation through mediation to arbitration and finally to adjudication. It is a valuable review.
Readers will find a rich appendix section, including a top-notch global negotiator's checklist, a detailed primer on international business transactions and an extensive bibliography of suggested further reading.
Truly, as Roger Fisher concluded, "this is the best book" in its field.

How to negotiate with other cultures

I have just finished reading `The Global Negotiator' by Jeswald W. Salacuse. Salacuse is a member of the Steering Committee of the Harvard Program on Negotiation.

Salacuse identified Culture as special barrier #2 to global deal making. He identified the four elements of culture as Behavior, Attitudes, Norms and Values. Salacuse also identifies ten ways that culture affects deal making, and provides data on how different cultures value each of these factors.

He brings up an interesting point in this part of the book - cultures may be different, but professions often carry their own set of values which are similar among workers from different cultures around the world. The military, for instance, appreciates risk taking and does not make decisions by consensus. This military `culture' is the same, whether the soldiers are American or Japanese.

I would recommend this book for anyone involved in professional or personal interactions with a member of a different culture. Understanding the framework of how culture operates in personal and professional life has given me the tools to more easily identify and compensate for my own cultural beliefs.

This book is shaking the business world to its very core, and for good reason: it exposes the real dynamics within corporate and even governmental leadership, and shows us why despite monumental failures, nobody was severely punished in the financial disasters that have been unleashed in the world in the past decades or so. If you’re like me who have been grumbling about the “blessings” that are being given to those who are perceived to be less talented or skilful, then read this book and finally “get” it. And once you understand how it all works, you can proceed to the next step: take advantage of what you learn.

I absolutely love how Vandell used a semi-fictional approach in fleshing out the theory with the use of characters (Charles, Dave and Bill). I have met a lot of Dave, Charles and Bill in my life that I found myself nodding in assent as I read the book. This is one of the hallmarks of Vandell’s work—it is never highfaluting, always striving to make everything as plain and simple, yet it never fails to astonish. Even the simple headline “how to create your unfair advantage” made me do a double-take—these are business principles turned on their heads, and they make sense.

This book is an absolute must-read—from students, to bankers, to managers, to rank-and-file employees. If you want to see how the world is really run, understand the principles that are used by people to create (or simulate) value and indispensability, this is the book for you. There’s no going around it. Get it now. I highly recommend.

What is bargepole management? After reading the title and description, I was immediately intrigued. It certainly seems interesting enough.

The book did not disappoint; it was every bit as interesting as the summary makes it: the author points out that success does not necessarily have to do with your skill level, or intelligence, or even effort... in fact, the bargepole system is a "shortcut" to success. It's a very interesting theory, and the author goes on to describe how this system can help you succeed at your workplace or company. This is the first time I've heard of this, as I, like many others, have often been told that success comes from hard work, and hard work alone will get you further. The author really goes to support and explain bargepole management through examples of (fictional, but realistic) people: the "aristocrat," Dave, the "Enchanter," Charles, and the "Tyrant," Bill, for example, painting a convincing picture of what bargepole management is--and could be.

The book then goes into the mindset of bargepole management, and on what economic basis that bargepole theory works... and then of course, how to implement bargepole theory into your own life. I'm absolutely amazed at the wealth of information that the author provides his readers, and this is a must have for anyone looking to advance in their jobs. It's a shortcut.. and a shortcut that works. Detailed, yet to-the-point and brilliantly written, this is an invaluable book. I highly recommend this.

I WOULD touch this book with a 10 foot pole! Wonder why your boss hasn't been fired? Read this

Mitch Vandell has nailed it right on the head. He has focused a magnifying glass on issues with corporate management we all have experienced on the road of this rat race called 'working'. All these things our bosses and managers do, we've all complained about but haven't realized that ALL of these behaviors fall under one umbrella that the author has named "Bargepole Management". While the title may be elusive and unknown to the reader it's explained right away and you has the reader has an epiphany and goes, "Thats a GREAT Term!".

In the United States we use the turn of phrase, "I wouldn't touch that with a 10 foot pole" and that is BargePole management at it's best!

Great read (and good strategies if you want one of those cushy, easy Bargepole manager jobs!). You won't regret this nice leisurely read. Only takes about 2-3 hours, great if you are traveling.

About the Author
Kory Floyd is associate professor and director of graduate MA studies in the Hugh Downs School of Human Communication at Arizona State University. He holds a Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Arizona (1998), an M.A. in Speech Communication from the University of Washington (1994), and a B.A. in English Literature from Western Washington University (1991). He has authored or co-authored four other books and more than 60 journal articles and book chapters on topics related to affectionate communication, nonverbal behavior, and family relationships. In addition, he is currently editor of Journal of Family Communication and has been an associate editor of Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.
