About the Author
Tim Leberecht is the chief marketing officer of NBBJ, a global design and architecture firm that helps organizations such as Amazon, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Boeing, Microsoft, Samsung, Starbucks, and Tencent create meaningful experiences. He is the former chief marketing officer of Frog Design, a product-innovation and strategy firm acclaimed for its work with Apple and many other Fortune 500 brands. His writing has appeared in publications such as Fast Company, Forbes, Fortune, and Wired. He has spoken at such venues as TEDGlobal, the Economist Big Rethink, DLD, the Silicon Valley CEO Summit, and the World Economic Forum. His TED Talk "3 Ways to (Usefully) Lose Control of Your Brand" has been viewed by almost a million people to date. He was born and raised in Germany, and lives in San Francisco with his wife and daughter.

If You Love Yourself, You Won't Want To Read This!

The opposite of love is...hate.
After reading the first few pages of this, I felt like I'd gone on a blind date, where, upon meeting the date, he looked fabulous. But as soon as he started talking...telling me how deeply intellectual he was, quoting other people every other sentence, making up his own lingo, and jumping from subject to subject; my heart fell and I escaped early enough to climb into bed with any of Napleon Hill's books, Malcolm Gladwell's Tipping Point, Seth Godin, or Steve Pressfield's The War of Art.
Firstly, I have no idea who this book is for.
It's not for an entrepreneur who likes things kept simple - that's for sure.
Leberecht jumps all over the place going from market commodities, to Global Agendas, to the plight of humanity.
What's worse, is that almost every page is a statistic, a quote from someone else, or the results of a poll. Simply read the "Note" Section in the back and you'll understand what I mean.
I appreciate a few quotes or stats here and there - but seriously, it stops the flow of reading and it also shows that pretty much, the author doesn't have any stories, he's simply exchanging his thoughts for those of other people.
But when he does have original ideas...hold on to your glitter girls! (and listen, I LOVE glitter. I love anything that sparkles. I'm a totally girly girl but Leberecht's writing even had MY rolling my eyes!)
"You will shimmer and glow among the doom and gloom." "Transcend the individual life and usher in a new romantic age." "I romantically envisioned a magical encounter with fascinating strangers."
And Leberecht guides the reader to create a better life in his "Rules of Enchantment" (I think he's stealing this from Sally Hogsheads book, Fascination).
Ugh. Just non stop intellectual hipster fluff that even gives you a Business Romantic Playlist advising you to listen to Sylvain Chaveau (who???) Gustav Mahler, Arms and Sleepers, Arvo Part, and Jacques Brel - to name a few.
So, who's this book for?
It's for people who buy into anything with that makes them feel more intellectual than the guy next door.
If you can smell BS a mile away, then trust me, save your money!
This is not romance, this is ppdicky!

Business is another form of expression...

The core premise of the book is that businesses are essentially another form of expression - if that doesn't expose the "romanticism" infused in the book, nothing will. Nevertheless, the author doesn't go too overboard with the narrative - he is cleverly making a point that value capture methods typically emphasize revenues and other process metrics and do not accentuate experiences as much. Leberecht uses a slightly convoluted narrative to make this point - but it is well-made. Using various examples (cherry-picked for its efficacy, of course), the author manages to convey that successful businesses shouldn't be thought about in strict revenue models. The book is mostly directed to business model designers/entrepreneurs who have some degree of control on how to shape the consumer experience. To that end, the book provides a useful foil to the dollars-and-cents approach seen in academic treatment. In his enthusiasm, Leberecht tends to downplay the traditional approaches unnecessarily. Overall, a good read that provides an entrepreneur develop another dimension on business model generation - emphasizing user experiences and potential levers for generating passionate stickiness to the business/service..

Entertaining and Inspiring Read

Leberect starts off with a statistic that only 13% of employees are "fully involved and enthusiastic about their jobs" with 63% lacking motivation and 24% actively disengaged then launches into stories of many happy successful business people. My impression is these stories are an attempt to rouse the curiosity and to kindle an ember to get some of those 63% inspired to use their talent to work for something better and bigger. The former buzzword passion has been replaced here with romantic.
Written in an entertaining manner with a pace that moves along quickly this is an interesting, fun and cheerful read for those who want inspiration and enjoy business. I have the impression that it would be most effective to inspire individuals to become entrepreneurs or for those already running their own business. The non-traditional ideas and out of the box methods are harder to implement within a large corporation whose culture runs opposite to these notions.
I enjoyed this book and rate it 4 stars = I Like It.
