If you want to understand leadership, study the philosophies and actions of successful leaders. Better yet, learn from their stories. This book has those stories -- imbued with the theory of leadership and related in a down-to-earth and accessible voice. "Sooner State of Mind" should be required reading for every undergrad leadership course in OK. It teaches without being preachy and delivers authentic stories of leaders who walk the talk of transformational leadership. Thanks to the authors for adding to my book list of recommended reading for young leaders. Note: If you're looking for a gift for an OK grad this season (HS or college) this is it!

A Leadership Book Both Potent and Charming

Bill Treasurer, who in full disclosure is a client and friend, has done something rarely seen in business literature: He's written a leadership book, "Leaders Open Doors," that is both potent and charming.

The idea for the book came to him unexpectedly.

When Bill's five-year-old son, Ian, returned home from school, the youngster said his teacher had chosen him as that day's class leader.

"What did you do as class leader?" asked Bill.

"I got to open doors for people," said Ian.

That innocent answer knocked decades of convoluted leadership theory right out of Bill's head. He knew he had heard a leadership truth that was unadorned and far-reaching.

Writes Bill: " . . . to be a leader is to open doors for others. Leaders open doors of perception, possibility, and most importantly, opportunity."

One of my favorite things about the book are its chapter-concluding exercises. Trying to lead can overwhelm us if we let it, but time and again Bill provides exercises that help readers see opportunity in even the most intimidating situations.

Bill's book, Leaders Open Doors, is packed with well-thought through suggestions for changing the way we think about influencing others.

One of the most powerful "lenses" Bill gives us is to shift from problem-focused leadership to OPPORTUNITY-focused leadership. As I read the ideas and stories Bill presents, I reflected back on my best boss, a true "open-door leader." All these concepts ring true to me - and I'm sure they will with you, as well.

This is an inspiring, quick read with application questions at the end of each chapter. There is where the reader will find the greatest learning - putting these concepts into ACTION with our teams day to day is the best way to honor our team members.

This books shows you how to inspire those that you lead through stories and anecdotes of the author. Bill does a great job at showing leaders how to use opportunities instead of problems to lead your team. It is quick read that has questions for you at the end of each chapter to enforce the message and take action right away. Plus Bill is donating all the royalties from the sale of this book to children's charities. Pick up one for yourself and for someone else. It is worth it!

A smart way to introduce Personal Finance to young adults!

I Want More Pizza is an informative, yet easy-to-read book that introduces and simplifies real-world personal finance to teens and young adults.

The book is compact and visually pleasing - NOT a cumbersome read - but it's PACKED with useful information. It's written in a friendly tone, as if the author is having an upbeat and casual conversation with the reader on topics such as; why you should begin saving sooner rather than later, understanding mental blocks, smart ways to save, investing options, determining risk, the dangers of debt, credit vs. debit cards, compound growth, paying for college, etc.

This book breaks down personal finance for teens and explains how "time is their biggest asset" regarding saving and investing in their future. The sooner we understand these options, the better equipped we are to make sound financial decisions.

There are a handful of review questions at the end of each chapter to help reinforce the concepts.

Overall, this is a very useful tool for young adults. I plan on buying more to give as graduation gifts.

About the Author
Robert Luckadoo has a knack for success. Whether it’s in the world of NASCAR racing, collegiate fast-pitch softball or financial services, he’s always found a way to win. It’s no wonder that audiences find him to be such an inspiring speaker. A geophysics major with a master’s in business management, Robert started his first company—a geological consulting firm—in 1989, and since then he’s become something of a startup expert, starting six more businesses and growing them to maturity before selling them as going concerns. Currently, he’s an estate planning specialist with Southern Farm Bureau Life Insurance Company and has a reputation for commitment and integrity and a lengthy history of customer satisfaction within the financial-services industry. Because he considers helping clients with their financial needs to be a high calling, word of mouth has always been very much in his favor. And Robert’s successful track record literally extends to the track. He’s a former team owner and driver in the NASCAR Goody’s Dash and Winston Racing series, and has competed at some of the top tracks in NASCAR including the Bristol Speedway, the Charlotte Motor Speedway, and the Daytona International Speedway. His love of sports and his leadership skills have also led him to coaching positions in fast-pitch softball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and as head coach at Meredith College in Raleigh, N.C., where he transformed the Meredith team from cellar dwellers to conference contenders. Amazing

This book was one of my surprise reads so far this year. I had never head of the author. But the title of the book really grabbed my attention. I am in the middle of a yearlong leadership program at work and I have already recommended they add this to the reading list. It is one of the best business books I have read in years. At under a hundred and thirty pages it packs a lot of punch into a few pages.

In the introduction Robert states: "So the term "a little grit in your craw" refers to qualities like courage and determination that people use to "break down" challenging situations into manageable situations-qualities that we can use to take advantage of the opportunities God gives all of us." And also "My hope is that you find the eight essential strengths I cover in this book to be a road map for your success, a small prism of clarity in a world shrouded in fog. I hope you'll embrace these eight must-have qualities-diligence, tenacity, optimism, flexibility, discipline, resilience, confidence and purpose-and use them to your great advantage." And those 8 points are also the key chapters. The sections in the book are:

To be honest this book was so good that a few times I put it down to really work through the chapter. Even though they are short and to the point, a few times I restarted a chapter to really set the points.

Robert declares that "I hope the eight qualities that are the focus of this book inspire you to become a beacon of light for those in your life. I hope they help you to meet the challenges of your life with hope and promise. And most of all, I hope they inspire you to take advantage of every opportunity that God provides you." And having finished this book twice through now I know that it can do that if you are willing to read, be open and learn.

Chapter 4 was one of the most powerful for me, Flexibility! "Make a point to be more flexible in both your career and your personal life. You'll be a lot happier, and your family will, too." This was probably the single most important lesson for me. I love rules and procedures and under certain conditions that dedication has really helped me thrive professionally, but it has been a hindrance in family life, with my wife and children. This chapter had so many takeaways that I am trying to apply.

In the closing notes Robert declares: "If the window you aspire to reach is the one at the top of the carousel, the one that seems so far out of reach, all you have to do is embrace the eight qualities I've focused on in this book and make them a part of your daily routine. Success doesn't come easily-it comes through a calculated, deliberate, mode of operation in your daily life-and these eight qualities will act as a foundation for that success. If exercised diligently and with a tenacious spirit, they'll take you to the next level in your career and in your personal life. They'll take you to the top of the carousel, where you can jump through the window that's offering you the opportunity to achieve your greatest ambitions." And it is so true.

This is a great book. I have already recommended it to a number of people. It will help you have greater success in both your personal and professional life.

Robert has vitality and the ability to bring to the page a consistent theme of excitement and belief in the reader's ability to become successful in business and in life. As he states, ` I wrote this book to inspire those who believe, as I do, that God has a plan for our lives, and especially for those who believe we have to make the absolute most of this plan.'

The premise of this book is to focus on the 8 strengths needed for success: Diligence, Tenacity, Optimism, Flexibility, Discipline, Resilience, Confidence, and Purpose. IN this book he offers personal experiences with each of these strengths and throughout the book he makes reference to fulfilling an enhancing God's Plan for our lives. If at times the fundamental Christian asides seem heavy, realize they come form the author's heart and min. He cares, and we can see that is obvious. I sound self-help book. Grady Harp, February 15

Finding Personal and Business Success, Through Discovering Your Life Purpose

“Grit in Your Craw – The 8 Strengths You Need to Succeed in Business and in Your Life” is solid advice based on developing eight essential strengths for success in your personal and business life. This fast moving narrative reads like fiction.

I became totally engrossed in the reading experience; the book provided me with a positive sense of optimism, and made me feel good about my day, my opportunities past and future.I found some personal “take a-ways” from Luckadoo’s writing. These include:

• The importance of strategic planning
• Having long and short term goals
• A plan for embracing the 8 qualities of the book in accomplishing my aspirations and goals
• The rewards of discipline resulting from the productive use of time

Robert Luckadoo, coach, entrepreneur, pilot, race car driver, insurance professional, and family man uses life stories to illustrate each of the eight essential strengths needed to succeed. His writing is highly creative conveying a positive outlook which produces contagious optimism, important to creating client acceptance and confidence.

A unique feature of the book that sets it apart from similar self-improvement books is his Gospel centered Worldview. The book is designed for performance based professionals and anyone looking for life strategies and direction for finding their purpose in life. Highly readable, highly recommended.

Making more money!

This book has helped shed light on ways I can make more money and start my own business as a nurse. I think a lot of nurses think their career path is limited to hospital work; this book ass new for you, it's not. I really liked how the book was setup in simple steps. I would recommend this book to any nurse wanting to make more money.

You can be successful too....

I commend this author for sharing her success with millions who want to stop living from paycheck to paycheck. After reading this book and doing some research I too discovered that it is possible. We have to be able believe in our strengths and years training and know we can do something beyond what is expected of us. This book really gives a honest perspective on how you can enjoy financial freedom and do what you love. It's no overnight success, it requires some hard work and dedication but this book shows that it is possible. You too can have the success you always wanted.
