Reading "Competent is Not an Option" is not an option. It's a must-read for organizations who want to go to the next level.

It makes sense to me that a leader should be competent, but that, unfortunately, is not always the case. Perhaps you've work with someone in a leadership position that was less that competent. Or maybe you were the customer or client that had to deal with a manager at a company that just didn't "get it." Competency is table stakes for a company to perform at its highest levels. Art Turock makes the case for what should be common sense, but sometimes isn't so common in certain organizations. He then goes on to use lessons he's learned from sports teams, athletes and coaches to teach us how we can reach even higher levels of competency. I admit to enjoying the "sports as a metaphor for business" lessons. They make sense, and they make for an entertaining read. But you don't have to be a sports enthusiast (I wanted to use the word "jock.") to enjoy and learn from this book. Turock understands business. He understands people. And, he proves that "Competent is Not an Option."

Of the 200+ business books I have read, this one is the best!

My favorite line in this book is "Where else in my life am I assuming I'm giving my best effort, but I'm not even close?!?"

This book does a great job explaining how to take a good or even great business team and make them truly elite. In addition to great tools for talent development the book does a fun job of showing how you could run a business like an elite sports franchise. As a Seahawks fan myself I loved learning how Head Coach Pete Carroll's talent development strategies could be used in my company. One of the best examples of this is learning in real time. Just like professional athletes, top business professionals should be analyzing their performance and intentionally making improvements on every attempt.

Well written, great read, highly recommended.

So glad that Art Turock has carefully compiled his wisdom on how to create a high-functioning team by following sports models. Many other authors have tread in this arena, but largely offered anecdotal observations. "Competent is Not an Option" represents longitudinal evidence and insights from the expert who has devoted his career to the subject.

Good Starting Point for a Potential Nonprofit Executive

I've written for a lot of nonprofits big and small. Too often the smaller ones are founded on a great idea but they haven't considered the actual management of an organization. It is more than being granted a certain tax status. That's what "250 Questions for Starting a Nonprofit" addresses.

At roughly 200 pages, there's not much meat. Most questions are answered in just a few hundred words, but deserve a thorough examination. That's OK. This isn't a how-to on all aspects. Instead, it should poke your curiosity. To really get the job done well, to smartly start a nonprofit, you'll need a consultant to help ramp you up. You need someone who knows the legal and accounting issues, as well as the strategic and marketing concerns, not to mention the very practical matters of human resources. However, in reading this book, you'll be prepared for your discussion with him or her.

For example, there's a section devoted to volunteers. When you need them, how to get them, and how to use them. Then, how do recognize their contributions.

Before reading this book I had no idea what scrum was. After reading, I realize how innovative and brilliant this project management methodology is. This book was well-written, clear, and concise. It made all the complex ideas and intricacies of scrum/agile graspable. This book would greatly benefit managers and planners, or anyone looking to learn about scrum. It’s an excellent resource.

This is very solid book on scrum. I have been involved in projects with daily scrum and this book was very informative on how and why to incorporate it in my new business. I took away a lot of new information. This book was easy to understand especially for beginners. It did a good job on explaining the waterfall and agile methodologies while focusing on the latter. Great book

Finally Know What Scrum Is

I never knew what Scrum was before reading this book but now I think I have a good grasp on what it is and what it can teach. Working with 20+ people a day I needed a way to manage how work gets done and how it should get done. This book helped manage my guys and we are now getting work done in a more efficient and effect way while using less resources.

Great guide to leadership

One of the first lines from the book states the purpose and ideals of the contents: leadership is "being about to inspire a group to work as one in order to achieve a common goal." I couldn't put it better myself. This book does an amazing job in instructing you on some amazing methods to work towards this ability. The author discusses the difference between management and leadership, the importance of and investments required of becoming a good leader, and a great guide on how to show great leadership skills (like trustworthiness, etc.). There is advice on how to lead through difficult situations such as change or difficult employee behaviors, as well as qualities of good decision making, negotiating and delegating. Definitely a great book if you are in management, want to own your own business or are a parent (leadership skills can always translate to being a good parent).

Insightful and Meaningful book on Leadership

I liked it right at the beginning. It was enlightening to read about leadership vs management. This makes a good read for entrepreneurs who are new to leading and managing their businesses. My personal experience on managing and leading business, people, and organization was not easy but it was all worth it. I agree about investing time to communicate with your people and be in the know of their status with their job and tasks. Although if you have the resources, you may just hire someone to manage your business and the staff but successful organizations and business require that you (as the leader) know first-hand the status of your people and business. Recommended to young leaders out there!

With this book, truly anyone can be a successful leader. This book is so full of very helpful and useful information on how to become a leader and a good manager that you really can’t go wrong. With dedicated chapters to goal setting, decision making, and negotiation and delegation, this book will give you everything you need to become an excellent leader. This is by far the best resource I’ve found to get you where you need to be and be the best leader you can be. I would recommend this book.

A Good Resource for all Authors

As an author, I have read a variety of books on book marketing and publishing. Eric Beebe’s No Nonsense No Gimmick Guide to Marketing Your Book definitely stands out at the top of the list. I found that his book was easy to read and relate to. Most writers don’t have a marketing background, and I thought this book plays well to that audience. The book is divided up into a variety of sections, and Beebe breaks down the aspects of what a writer needs to know quite well. It’s well organized and logical in its progression. The writing is clean and professional.

One thing that I enjoyed is that it really plays well to the current landscape of publishing, especially how it affects self-published and Indie authors. If you fall into that category, then this is a book that you will want to read. I like how things were explained and I felt that there were some elements of it that I could incorporate into my own marketing plan. Even if you’re not business or marketing savvy, there are things that you can take away from this book. For writers out there of all stripes, you should check out this book. I am glad that I did.

A quick starter guide for new authors.

This is a very fast read and I would recommend it for any authors just starting out or struggling to grow their readership. It applies the basic tenants of marketing to books. It lays out the steps, thought processes, and activities one needs to help promote and sell books. I would have rated it higher had it been a bit longer or dug a little deeper than just the basics. It felt like Marketing 101 and I'm not sure it offered any information that a bit of time on Google couldn't provide. That said, it puts all the info in one place and is a good reference with key concepts and list.

Worth the purchase at twice the cost

I own Hydra Publications, a small genre press, and I plan to make sure everyone of my authors reads No Nonsense. Mr. Beebe's tips on how to properly market your book is more than worth the cost of the book. And if you are a self published author, the tips on formatting are an added bonus. Mr. Beebe has been around the block a few times and knows how to keep you from getting lost.

Great advice overall

Just finished the book. It was very superficial. Great advice overall, but it was about a 25 min read for me - should have been a blog post. He sort of just listed off things that should be done without going into any depth on how to do these things (good example: Be a good story teller! How? Read Shakespeare and the like and model your stories off that! Really?)

Also he could use an editor. Lots of typos, some to the point of a sentence not making sense at all.

Fight Rejection

If you had it, you wouldn’t need this book written by a real pro. Most of us don’t and can use some help. Get it here and banish fear of social embarrassment. There is nothing worse. It’s a social world and I don’t want to get left out, but I hate rejection. If you do too, you will find this material of value, particularly the art of conversation. You will also understand how you are perceived and how to improve your image with others. I like the part about “social triggers.” Shy people get hope. It’s like a big pat on the back.

Key to happiness right here

I believe that I knew what some of these things were but did not have names for them until I read them so clearly laid out by Mr. King. I do see them very clearly now and I think that he is very right in saying that they are the keys to happiness in your life and everything that you would want. Who does not want to be more social and gain more friends? I sure do and learning social habits is a very big part of that.
