About the Author
Shirley A. Weis is Special Adviser to the President and Professor of Practice in the W. P. Carey School of Business and the College of Nursing and Health Innovation at Arizona State University. She is also President of Weis Associates, LLC, a national management and leadership consulting firm. Ms. Weis recently retired from her role as Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) for Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn. Her work involved overseeing 60,000 employees and coordinating overall institutional strategy and operation of Mayo Clinic's $9 billion healthcare system. Mayo treats more than a million patients a year from around the world. Ms. Weis holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing from Michigan State University, a Master of Management Degree from Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Mich., and a Doctor of Science Degree( hc) from Michigan State University. She is also Professor Emerita at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine. Shirley Weis has held a number of clinical and administrative leadership positions in her 40-year career including chair of Administrative Services for Mayo Clinic in Arizona, chair of the Mayo Clinic Managed Care Department, executive director (CEO) for Mayo Management Services, Inc., chief operating officer (COO) for Blue Care Network Mid-Michigan and emergency services manager for a Lansing, Mich., healthcare system. Shirley Weis has a broad academic and teaching background. You'll be surprised by this book!

I was happily surprised by this book. Business books can be boring and repetitive, however, Shirley Weis has written a compelling story within her book about business. Through use of story and the metaphor of tennis, Weis kept me reading with interest. I would recommend this book for any woman who wants to get a better understanding of her own "game strategy" to succeed. Throughout history, men have had the advantage of learning game strategy early on. Weis has brought this perspective to women through her story of rising to the top. Well written and enjoyable to the end.

A Successful CAO’s Golden Rule of Business

In Playing to Win in Business, Shirley A. Weis shares a look-back at her career progression from nurse’s aide to the first female Chief Administrative Officer in the 150-year history of the Mayo Clinic.
The author defines her own winning in business as achieving the level of management to which she had aspired since adolescence. In retrospect, she equates winning in business with climbing the corporate ladder, a skill which she emphasizes comes from knowing how to play the game.
To play the game successfully, she notes, one must understand the rules of the game: the big R’s and the small r’s, which require: knowing your own strengths, weaknesses and preferences; understanding the culture of the organization including how things get done; and figuring out how to present yourself in best light. The Golden Rule of Business, according to the author, is “Whoever has the Gold, makes the Rules…you have to follow the rules until you are at the top controlling the gold --- and then you can make the rules.”
Weis alludes to the rules of victory in tennis, quoting tennis champions and cleverly encapsulating the gist of each chapter in Questions from Up in the Stands for the reader to ponder at the conclusion of each chapter.
From my perspective as a successful corporate executive and entrepreneur, I was most impressed by Weis’s gutsy reaction to the evolution of managed care and the implications for her own career.
As a longtime leader of a financial women’s professional association, I believe the precepts in Playing to Win in Business would be helpful to coaches and mentors working with novices, rising stars and those temporarily stuck in place who want to play to win in the traditional corporate environment.

Well-written, insightful, thought-provoking, and usable.

Dr. Johnson's book is well-written, insightful and thought-provoking. Most important, in this short work he provides very useful and applicable suggestions on how to ensure your company doesn't fail for lack of leadership. He uses, after providing brief summaries of, the often-cited general personality traits of the various generations (gen X, millenials, etc.), with a focus on how they relate to a person's proclivity to lead and/or be led. At the minimum, this book will leave you more well informed. Using its insights directly or merely as a stimulus to form your own plan, you have the opportunity to strengthen your company.

Draws important conclusions

This book is an eye-opening exploration of the challenges that arise from managing members of different generations within an organization. Beginning by reviewing the established definitions of the generations currently in the American workforce, Dr. Johnson discusses the priorities and motivations of each, as well as commonly-held conceptions and misconceptions about them. He then details the role of several important management disciplines – including knowledge management, corporate social responsibility, and human capital management - and their relative relevance and impact on each generation.
In total, Dr. Johnson gives the reader a useful framework for thinking about organizational management in a workplace that appears sometimes to collapse the differences between age cohorts that can have genuine differences in outlook. Highly recommended.

Likeable and helpful

This is a good business and personal development book. The title describes what the book is trying to do- to help younger people get they knowledge they need to navigate the world of work successfully- hopefully without repeating too many of the previous generation's mistakes. I think it's spirit matches that of the French observation, "si jeunesse savoit, si vieillesse pouvoit." This book is written straight into that gap. There's a part of me reminded of the Philosopher in The Message of Ecclesiastes: A Time to Mourn and a Time to Dance (The Bible Speaks Today) and his observation, "No one remembers the former generations, and even those yet to come will not be remembered by those who follow them." Perhaps the new generations of workers have to make their own mistakes?

This book is aimed at those entering the world of work for the first time. I suspect this transition- from education to the workplace is one of the more sharp transitions we make in our lives. This book will help with that transition- if the new workers are ready to take its help. It should save some of the worst comments of older workers such as "clever he may be: smart he ain't." It should also save some young workers the indignity of being sent to stores for a "a long stand (in the corner)' There's a lot of good sense in this book, and a lot of good ideas- which will benefit experienced old hands as much as new starters. In particular his idea of try stop doing some things and see if they are missed has entertaining possibilities.

The book is written as series of short punchy topic based chapters- with some very good quotes that frame each chapter. There's a very clear emphasis on productivity from focused work, as opposed to the laborious inefficiency that passes itself off as work in all too many organisations. Is a Dilbert style workplace a joke or a way of life? (e.g. Dogbert's Top Secret Management Handbook)

I can recommend this book to those moving into the world of work for the first time. It will help you avoid a few mistakes, and have a lot more idea of what is going on around you.

I can also recommend it to experienced workers- its ideas and questions will make you think about what sort of rut you've got yourself into and what you want to do to improve it.

Great book! clear, excellent style for this kind of book, perfect addition to Fergus' "common sense" book. Elaborating on some topics everybody knows, only few apply and put the principles explained to the practice. It is worth mentioning here that the author surely has a knack of presenting such real life stories, she does it with such an ease that a reader is bound to connect with them instanteneously.

Very Good, but has bias

The author knows a lot about Forex and overall this is a must-read book for anyone into this market. However, the author doesnt explain what ecn/stp/dd brokers are (and why you should run away from dd), tries to make the reader think that opening an account outside the USA is riskier, and finally states that leverage above 50:1 isnt a good thing. Perhaps all this is because the Author works for a dd (dealing desk) brokerage in the USA, where leverage is limited... All in all you should read this book, but be critical and dont take every statement as absolute truth, as there are interests in play here.

Well Written, Organized Helicopter View

The "Dummies" formula is very good for getting started in this complex subject. Plain talk, helicopter view, organized. Headers let you jump between topics and skip topics as needed.

I haven't finished the book yet, but I can say that Brian Dolan is a very good writer and seems to know his topic. Some writers are unclear when explaining points they don't thoroughly understand themselves. Dolan's clarity and precision are impressive.

I have been trading currency for about 5 years and this was a good refresher source book for me. Easy to understand and read. Currency trading is not for everyone, but you are think about doing it this would be a good starting book to read. Explains the market and how it works.

A Valuable Tool for Proposal Professionals

I think this book is a great asset to professionals within the field of government contracting. While this book might be too advanced for beginners in the field or those just looking to get into it, if you already have some experience and are looking to improve your skills and strategies, then it should greatly help you. I like how the focus of the book is not just on the process of how to prepare and submit proposals, but rather on strategies that actually help you and your team win the work.

The author has written this book in a textbook lesson format that is easy to follow, and it's very personable with great examples from real-life that keep the content lively and far from boring. There is a lot of information in this book, so I see this as more than a one time read. It’s something I will be able to reference time and time again.
